Another very well known example of the use of micro-organisms is the production of alcohol by yeast fermentation. Our Alcohol Fermentation Kit looks at fermentation in detail comparing the Anaerobic and Aerobic processes, and monitoring both the cell mass (biomass) changes and volume of alcohol produced.
It also includes setting up an immobilised cell system for comparative purposes.

- Yeast Extract Powder
- Sodium Metabisulfite
- Sodium Alginate
- Dried Active Yeast
- Wine Yeast Compound
- Polythene Container
- Foam bung
- Plain bag
- Clear plastic tubing
- Miniature 3-way Luer Tap
- Plastic syringe
- Triple Scale Hydrometer
- Full instructions
The following additional materials or equipment are required:
- Glucose
- Aquarium pump
- Magnetic stirrer (ideally two - B8A82375)
- Colorimeter (B8R03174)
- 6-7cm length of glass tubing (to fit into PVC tube provided)
- Cotton wool (B8R06721)

- Could be an excellent activity for a GCSE / A-Level Science Club
- GCSE to A-Level Biology: Enzyme Activity
- It is best to set up fermentations first thing in the morning and sample as many times as possible throughout the day. Run the experiments for two or three days more, sampling regularly to show the log and stationary phases of growth. The fermentations should not be run for more than four days
- Virkon Disinfectant can be used to disinfect the equipment used.
