The Hydraulic Press demonstrates the transmissibility of fluid pressure and shows how mechanical advantage may be obtained using interconnected cylinders of different diameters.

Based upon graduated glass syringes having capacities of 10 ml and 50 ml and a cross-sectional area of 3 to 1, pistons are provided with loading platform 90mm in diameter.

Graduated syringe barrels also permit simple Boyle's law experiments to be carried out.

  • Key Stage 3 Chemistry - The Particulate Nature of Matter: The properties of the different states of matter (solid, liquid and gas) in terms of the particle model, including gas pressure.
  • Key Stage 4 Physics - Motion and Forces: Pressure measured by ratio of force over area – acting normal to any surface.
  • Key Stage 4 Physics - The Structure of Matter: Relating models of arrangements and motions of the molecules in solid, liquid and gas phases to their densities. Links between pressure and temperature of a gas at constant volume, related to the motion of its particles (qualitative).
